Townshend's History
Set against the backdrop of the Green Mountain State, Townshend, Vermont, is a town steeped in history and rustic charm. Chartered in 1753 as part of the New Hampshire Land Grants, the town was named after Charles Townshend of England, a notable figure of his time.
The early settlers of Townshend were hardworking farmers, tilling the land and creating a community that thrives to this day. The town's industrious spirit was evident when Granger built the first saw and grist-mill, which stood where Covey's saw-mill is located today.
Education has always been a priority for the people of Townshend. In fact, the town's Middle and High School, founded as a private seminary in October 1834, is one of the oldest secondary schools in Vermont.
The Townshend Historical Society plays an active role in preserving the town's rich history, collecting and preserving historical images, documents, artifacts, and places of historical significance.
